Self-esteem is explained in Cambridge Dictionary as a “belief and confidence in your own ability and value” or “respect for yourself”. In another definition offered by Rosenberg in 1965, who is considered as among the pioneers in this domain, self-esteem refers to the overall positive evaluations of an individual about himself. However, in fact, there are different types of self-esteem, and it does not always include optimistic perceptions of the self. Therefore, in 2003 Sedikides and Gress defined self-esteem as the perception or subjective appraisal of an individual towards his own self-worth, his feelings of self-respect and self-confidence as well as the extent to which that person has both positive and negative points of view of himself.
